Y12 Problem-Solving Booster

Overview

A half-day intensive ‘problem-solving booster’ event to help students improve their conceptual understanding and develop their problem-solving skills for A-Level mathematics. Developing students' problem-solving skills in this way can lead to improved attainment and greater confidence generally in mathematics.

Students will access this event from their school, in groups of 4 - 8 students. Each group needs to be overseen by someone in a position of responsibility within the school. We staingly encourage maths teachers to attend this event if at all possible, due to the opportunities for professional development that it offers.

Aims

  • To develop students' conceptual thinking using a range of problems from pure mathematics
  • To allow students time in small groups to discuss ideas and develop their thinking in collaboration with other students and mentors

Who will benefit from attending?

Y12 students of A-Level Mathematics.

Content

This event will be held online. The draft programme is as follows:

12.30 - 13.00: A plenary session covering some basic but very useful problem-solving techniques

13.05 - 13.20: Small group Dragon Maths competition PART 1 (4-8 students)

13.20 - 14.10: Small group session 1 (4-8 students), with two mentors from University of Chester, covering problems in co-ordinate geometry

14.15 - 15.05: Small group session 2 (4-8 students), with two mentors from University of Chester, covering problems in differentiation.

15.05 - 15.30: Small group Dragon Maths competition PART 2 plus brief plenary.
