Core Maths Summer Festival - Are you normal? Using the UK Data Service

Overview

Choosing a relatable and relevant data set can have a profound effect on your students’ motivation to investigate further. The UK Data Service houses the UK’s largest collection of social, economic and population data, including data from large social surveys and the UK Census. Within its wealth of data sets are a number of Open Data collections that are available for anyone to use.

Join Jen for this interactive session to learn about the data, try out resources, and reflect on how their use can contribute to greater engagement within your lessons and inter-departmental collaboration.

Jen Buckley works at the University of Manchester and is part of User Support and Training team for the UK Data Service. She develops training to support the use of data in the social sciences and has a special interest in learning resources that introduce how data skills can help us understand society.

Who will benefit from attending?

These sessions are designed to appeal to all maths teachers, regardless of how much experience of Core Maths you have had, if any. These sessions are also likely to appeal to teachers of other subjects that incorporate some mathematical content, such as Biology, Geography and Social Science.

Materials and Equipment

The sessions take place on Zoom.

We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and strongly encourage you to put your webcam on for some or all of the session. Please also come prepared to discuss and reflect for short periods in breakout rooms as this will be a feature of most of the sessions.

Eligibility

All teachers are eligible to apply for a place at the festival. If the festival becomes over-subscribed, teachers from state-funded schools and colleges are given priority; this may mean that we may be unable to provide places to non-state-sector applicants.

Cost

The sessions are free of charge to all teachers in England.
