Kent and Medway Teacher Network - University Admissions Tests

Preparing students to study Mathematics at University - what every mathematics teacher needs to know about university admissions tests

Overview

The Kent and Medway Teacher Network is a composite of the 3 teacher networks which normally run in our region and which are expected to return in September 2021. Because it runs in an online classroom, it negates the gegraphical challenges that we would normally encounter with network meetings and allows itself to be opened up to the whole region. It is an AMSP funded project, allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share best practice during this period when our schools are closed to visitors.

University admissions tests are no longer just for 'high-fliers' - all potential A grade students (as well as A* ones) will benefit from preparing for these exams. In this meeting we will start with a whistle-stop tour of the university admissions tests for mathematics, looking at a selection of problems from each before focusing on ways of using the TMUA material on logic and reasoning with your students - this will be equally useful for use with potential STEP and MAT students.

The workshop will be delivered by Alexandra Hewitt who is the AMSP Advanced Maths Support and Development Coordinator.

Aims

  • To gain a clearer understanding of the role and scope of university admissions tests.
  • To consider the use of TMUA questions to stretch the most able students.

Who will benefit from attending?

All teachers of A level maths, A level Further Maths and those who help to prepare students for university admissions tests will benefit from attending this event.
