Core Maths Summer Festival - Making Sense with Desmos

Desmos is a free suite of online mathematics tools. Two big highlights of this suite are the activities, that allow you to see responses from every student, and a very easy to use graphing package.

In this session we will consider how Desmos can be used to explore the mathematics that result from real life contexts and how that exploration can help to deepen student’s understanding of key concepts, as well as promoting meaningful conversations.

Natalie Vernon works for the AMSP and is particularly interested in how technology and an understanding of cognitive science can help to improve understanding and engagement in maths classrooms. Follow her on Twitter @NatalieV_MEI

Who will benefit from attending?

These sessions are designed to appeal to all maths teachers, regardless of how much experience of Core Maths you have had, if any. These sessions are also likely to appeal to teachers of other subjects that incorporate some mathematical content, such as Biology, Geography and Social Science.

Materials and Equipment

The sessions take place on Zoom.

We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and strongly encourage you to put your webcam on for some or all of the session. Please also come prepared to discuss and reflect for short periods in breakout rooms as this will be a feature of most of the sessions.

All teachers are eligible to apply for a place at the festival. If the festival becomes over-subscribed, teachers from state-funded schools and colleges are given priority; this may mean that we may be unable to provide places to non-state-sector applicants.

The sessions are free of charge to all teachers in England.
