Descriptive Statistics in Psychology
Overview
This event is being run in partnership with the Association for the Teaching of Psychology, as part of the ‘Maths in Psychology’ project, with support from the Department for Education.
This free, online session is for Psychology teachers who wish to build their confidence in teaching descriptive statistics. There will be a focus on measures of central tendency and dispersion but we will also touch on standard form, percentages and significant figures. During this session, we will model approaches to teaching these topics and share ideas on how to engage your students in meaningful discussions about data in Psychology.
Aims
- Develop confidence in teaching descriptive statistics in Psychology
- Understand how studying Core Maths will support students with the mathematical components of Psychology
- Network and share ideas with fellow teachers
Who will benefit from attending?
This session is aimed at teachers of Psychology who would like to increase their confidence in teaching descriptive statistics. No previous knowledge is expected.
Content
This session will focus on measures of central tendency and dispersion but we will also touch on standard form, percentages and significant figures.
Materials and Equipment
We aim to emulate as much of the ‘face-to-face’ experience as possible and give delegates opportunities to discuss ideas with each other in breakout rooms. Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so we strongly encourage the use of microphones and webcams.
Other Information
These events will be run in Zoom. Teachers who sign up will be emailed in the days prior to the session and again on the day of the session with a link to register for the meeting in order to receive a link to the Zoom room.
There will also be a session on Inferential Statistics in Psychology on April 17th which may also be of interest.

Due to the way we are funded, priority will be given to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges in England and trainee Psychology teachers. Teachers from other institutions are very welcome to apply and will be accepted if we have capacity.
