Supporting students with the mathematics of STEP/MAT/TMUA


This event will be of interest to teachers who would like to gain some familiarity with STEP/MAT/TMUA examinations to help prepare students in their schools who have an interest in taking these examinations.




  • To explore ways to boost candidates confidence in attempting questions.
  • To help candidates plan their time during the examination.
  • To help candidates produce high-quality written solutions to typical problems.

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers preparing candidates for STEP/MAT/TMUA.


Differences between STEP/MAT/TMUA and A level and further maths examinations.

Production of mathematical arguments in written form to maximise clarity and rigour.

Tackling multiple choice questions for maximal scoring.

Mark schemes, mark allocation and use of time.

Implications for teaching.

Other Information

We will meet online via the "Big Blue Button" conferencing software on 24 February, 03 March and 10 March at 1615.

You will receive a link via email 10 minutes before the meeting and this will take you to the meeting browser (please do not pass this link on to anyone else).

There is no need to download any software beforehand: BBB is designed to be used on a variety of platforms (including most smartphones) but you will get the best experience via a desktop or laptop computer, running either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as the browser.

You will need a webcam, microphone and headphones/speakers to take engage fully.


This event is for participants from state-funded schools and colleges and academies. Applications from independent schools will be accepted and places will only be granted if there is availability.
