Bringing remote learning to life - Free maths data tools to enhance your online biology lessons

This event is being run in partnership with the Association for Science Education, as part of the ‘Mathematics for Biology Teachers’ project (MfBT), with support from the Department for Education.

This free teacher CPD event focuses on using Desmos to support teaching the mathematical content of biology coursesDesmos is free and easy to use software that can help improve the engagement of your remote pupils and deepen their understanding of data skills. It can be used to create engaging and powerful activities for both synchronous and asynchronous teaching.

Teachers will get the opportunity to create their own online activities for students, including card sorts and data analysis. They will also discover many pre-made activities which they can take straight to their lessons.

The session aims to equip teachers with a toolbox of methods that can be used to illustrate the mathematics content of biology courses but will also be useful for all teachers of science.

  • To be able to create, set and adapt Desmos activities to enhance engagement and understanding of students
  • Provide examples of maths problems that could be used in the teaching of students in biology
  • Network and share ideas with fellow teachers

Who will benefit from attending?

This session is aimed at non-maths teachers, in particular teachers of biology, although all teachers of science are welcome.

If you are a maths teacher please look here to see our suite of free Core Maths teacher support including our Core Maths Common Topics course as well as our on demand Core Maths top ups professional development.

Materials and Equipment

Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so the use of microphones and webcams is encouraged. It would be helpful, but not essential, if you have signed up for a Desmos account prior to the session (this can be done by visiting the Desmos home page)

It might also be useful, although by no means necessary, to have a folder with a few saved pictures (on a biology theme) that could be used to create a card sort.

Other Information

Please note that booking for this event will close at 4pm on Tuesday 2nd February to give us time to process applications.

Teachers who sign up will be emailed in the days prior to the session and again on the day of the session with a link to the online meeting room.

This teacher CPD workshop, and others to follow, are part of the ASE and AMSP 'Mathematics for Biology Teachers' project (MfBT), supported by the Department for Education. The project aims to develop the capabilities and confidence of biology teachers in their use of mathematics within the post 16 context, promote the value of studying level 3 mathematics to post 16 biology students, promote the provision of Core Maths by schools and colleges with uptake by a wider group of their post 16 students, and highlight the 'maths rich' nature of biology in different educational phases and careers. For more information about this project, and to get involved, contact [email protected]

The sessions are free of charge to all teachers from UK state-funded schools and colleges.
