East of England Teacher Network - Raising Girls' Participation
The East of England teacher networks are AMSP-funded projects allowing teachers of maths to meet, to collaborate and to share professional development. We meet regularly in a variety of formats.
Who will benefit from attending?
Maths teachers from state-funded and independent schools. Teachers from other regions are welcome.
We know that overall girls tend to be under-represented in Level 3 maths (Core Maths, A Level Maths and Further Maths). This session will aim to give you some suggestions to help you encourage girls to consider taking maths beyond GCSE. Although the material is specifically pitched at girls, the ideas would be appropriate for all genders.
Rachel Beddoes from the Advanced Maths Support Programme will introduce some ideas on raising girls' participation. Teachers will then have the opportunity to share experiences and discuss plans. Teachers who wish to listen without participating are also very welcome.
Materials and Equipment
The AMSP uses Big Blue Button (BBB), which is an online conferencing system that allows participants to collaborate in real time.
You are advised to use a headset or headphones with an inline microphone to provide the best sound quality and to prevent audio issues for other users. A laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone may be sufficient if you’re in a quiet area but please take the time to check this before the session. BBB is designed to be used on a variety of platforms but you will get the best experience via a desktop or laptop computer, running either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as the browser.
Note: Internet Explorer and Edge are not suitable currently.
Discussion will be both via audio and chat boxes. Please join with a microphone if possible.
