Kent and Medway Teacher NetworkBuilding Resilience in Your Maths Classroom
The Kent and Medway Teacher Network is a composite of the 3 teacher networks which normally run in our region and which are expected to return in January 2021. Because it runs in an online classroom, it negates the gegraphical challenges that we would normally encounter with network meetings and allows itself to be opened up to the whole region. It is an AMSP funded project, allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share best practice during this period when our schools are closed.
- Understand why some pupils give up when tackling maths problems
- Explore which pedagogical approaches help build resilience in learners
- Understand how specific use of language can help build resilience in young learners
Who will benefit from attending?
This session would benefit any teachers of Key Stage 3 or 4 mathematics, whether they are NQTs, experienced teachers or Heads of Department. Teaching Assistants working within maths departments would also find this session useful.
How can you help build resilience in your maths students? And, in particular, how can you do this post-lockdown?
This workshop will look at which pedagogical approaches help to do this and will consider what language and behaviours improve pupils' independence and resilience when tackling mathematical problems.
Materials and Equipment
It would be useful for you to have access to some old GCSE past papers (printed out, ideally) to look at (and scribble on) in the session.
The AMSP uses Big Blue Button (BBB), which is an online conferencing system that allows participants to collaborate in real time.
You are advised to use a headset or headphones with an inline microphone to provide the best sound quality and to prevent audio issues for other users. A laptop with a built-in webcam and microphone may be sufficient if you’re in a quiet area but please take the time to check this before the session. BBB is designed to be used on a variety of platforms but you will get the best experience via a desktop or laptop computer, running either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as the browser.
Note: Internet Explorer and Edge are not suitable currently.
Sadly, I won’t be able to provide refreshments in the normal way, but I hope that you’ll be able to join us with your own tea/coffee and cake/biscuits!
Due to the nature of the online classroom, places are strictly limited. Please complete the booking form on the flyer to request a place.
Any teacher or Teaching Assistant (of any subject) wishing to attend may do so, although this is aimed primarily at teachers of mathematics.
This event is offered FREE.
