Teacher Network Meeting - Online

GCSE Problem Solving

Overview

The Leeds & Bradford Teachers Network is an AMSP funded project, allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share best practice.

We meet three times a year and the programme is a mixture of informal sessions and speaker-led training events.

Aims

  • To develop strategies for helping students have the confidence and skills to tackle open or unstructured problems
  • Consider ways of getting into these problems and the strategies that can be used for solving them
  • Think about where students might struggle

Who will benefit from attending?

Teachers who are currently teaching Mathematics to KS3 & GCSE students.

Please bring your favourite problem solving resource which could be a specific worksheet, activity to share with colleagues attending the Network.

Content

An opportunity to do some maths, discuss the pedagogy related to GCSE Problem Solving and have a chat with maths teachers working in schools in the region.

You will be provided with a Problem Solving booklet, intended to help learners develop the mental flexibility they will need for the new elements of the exam. The resource could also be embedded into your scheme of work.

Materials and Equipment

The AMSP uses Big Blue Button (BBB), which is an online conferencing system that allows participants to collaborate in real time. It is easy to use and has features which enable a tutor and participants to communicate live on-line by using audio, video, instant messaging and, if needed, writing on a shared virtual whiteboard.

The session will be remote and will take place on the Big Blue Button platform, as such you will need a laptop/desktop computer or other internet enabled device. If possible please use a machine with a microphone enabled to allow for chat with other delegates.

We will set up the classroom and send you the classroom link, via e-mail, shortly before the session is due to start.

BBB is designed to be used on a variety of platforms but you will get the best experience via a desktop or laptop computer, running either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as the browser. Note: Internet Explorer and Edge are not suitable currently.

It is advised that you check the requirements to access the online classroom in advance of the live session that you will be attending. You can do this at any time.

Don’t forget to bring your own tea and biscuits!
