Preparing for MAT, TMUA and STEP: a course for Year 12 students
This course will introduce you to the skills and knowledge required to tackle university admissions tests such as MAT, TMUA and STEP. Although these admissions tests are based on A-level Maths and Further Maths, you’ll find that there is a huge step-up in intensity between A levels and these admissions tests. Hugely more demands on your ability to write mathematical arguments are made, and a greater depth of knowledge is needed. So, it’s important that you start preparing in Year 12.
The course will comprise of 16 session, each lasting 2 hours and spread over approximately 8 weeks; in each session, we’ll cover a different a different topic. Every session there will be some teaching, but I hope that you spend a considerable amount in each lesson tackling challenging questions.
You’ll be given extensive notes on each topic. These notes will contain much more material than we’ll have chance to cover in lessons, and so you’ll be expected to read them in your own time. The most successful students who have done the course in the past spent a lot of time independently studying the notes and tackling the exercises.
In addition to tackling challenging maths questions, the other thing you’ll enjoy is meeting likeminded students from your own school as well as from other local schools.

Session 10 Algebra: polynomials
Session 11 Trigonometry: trig identities and solving trig equations
Session 12 Combinatorics: placement and counting
Session 13 Geometry: coordinates and vectors
Session 14 Calculus: curve sketching
Session 15 Calculus: integration
Session 16 Combinatorics: binomial and multinomial expansions
