Chippenham Teacher Network

Proof in A level Maths

Overview

Chippenham Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share best practice. We meet four times a year and the programme is mainly speaker-led training events and may include informal sessions.

Content

There is an increased emphasis on Proof in the new A level specification.

During this session we will consider a range of different proofs to identify some key ideas that students should be aware of, and to discuss how to support students in making a start with unfamiliar proofs.

The main types of proof we will consider are

  • Deductive proofs
  • Proof by exhaustion
  • Disproof by counter example
  • Proof by contradiction

(We will not look at proof by induction as that is only in Further Maths)
