North Kent KS5 Network

Using Graphical Calculators in the A level Classroom

The North Kent KS5 Network is an AMSP-funded project allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share professional development. We meet four times per yeas and the programme is a mixture of informal sessions and speaker-led training events

Gerard Dummet, UK Education Manager, Casio Calculators, will run a bespoke network session on making best use of graphical calculators in the A level classroom.

The session will be split into 2 parts:

  1. Solving trig equations using numerical and graphical methods on the CG50 calculator to ensure everyone gets the important basics and sees the pedagogical value of the calculator. He will include tips and tricks to challenge the more advanced users of the calculator.
  2. Gerard has agreed to run this part of the session on demand. His initial suggestion is to begin with probability and to take it from there. He is also happy to cover recursion and matrices (and will bring along some examples) as well as coordinate geometry (depending on what this is), polar graphs and conics.

He will also outline the support programme that Casio provide to schools and explain how you could be entitled to a FREE CG50 grahical calculator.

Materials and Equipment

CG50 grahical calculators will be provided to those delegates who do not have one of their own.
