Proof, Problem Solving and Modelling in the A Level Classroom

Dorchester

Overview

This one day course for teachers of AS and A level Mathematics, provides an opportunity to consider how the new 'overarching themes' of proof, problem solving and modelling can be delivered together with aspects of the curriculum content from pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics.

Although these themes have always been a part of A level Mathematics, they now account for 50% of the marks in the new assessment objectives. Examiners' reports on the new AS and A level Mathematics from summer 2018, from all specifications, agree that "The most significant challenge was the new assessment objectives, which led to changes in the demands placed upon students." (AQA)

In this course we will consider ways in which adressing the overarching themes can be integrated into teaching of the curriculum content.

Aims

  • To consider how the overarching themes of proof problem solving and modelling can be addressed within the curriculum content.

Who will benefit from attending?

All teachers of A level Mathematics who would like to develop their teaching to address the new assessment objectives in A level Mathematics.
