Teaching Maths in Context at GCSE



This session will explore ways to embed mathematical problem solving skills in your lessons and engage students by using real world contexts. You will leave with ideas, resources and enthusiasm to try them out. You will also find out about the benefits for your students of taking Level 3 Core Maths alongside their main programme. This session is for all levels of mathematical confidence.

GCSE teachers of any subject which includes Mathematical content

3.50-5.00pm What’s the problem with percentages?

Resources for Teaching in Context
Using of authentic context can be engaging and motivating but what makes a context feel authentic? This session will give you an opportunity to explore maths in context from other subjects and explore topical resources to take straight to your lessons.

Advising Students on their Next Steps
A short session to explore the maths options for students post GCSE, how these courses can support other subjects and University applications. You will get ideas to take to the classroom which will encourage students to reflect on the maths they will need in their future careers.

What’s the Problem with Percentages?
Students have been learning about percentages since Primary school so why are they still causing problems for students beyond GCSE? During this session you will see how students at different levels approach similar problems, discuss how we can build on students’ prior experience and explore percentage change questions across the a range of subjects.
