Introduction to Statistics

Maidenhead

Overview

This course will cover the key concepts in the statistics section of Mathematics A level.

Use of the Large Data Sets should underpin all statistics teaching and this event will demonstrate how this can be used to increase students' interest and enthusiasm for the subject as well as their understanding and 'statistical common sense'.

Teaching approaches will encourage an active learning style and the development of sound understanding of key concepts.

Aims

  • To introduce the Binomial and Normal distributions
  • To develop ideas of hypothesis testing with the Binomial distribution and extend these to the Normal distribution and correlation.
  • To demonstrate how the Large Data Sets can be used to underpin all the statistical teaching.
  • To consider how technology can be used to enhance students' understanding of statistical concepts.
