Problem Solving for C-grade students

Wheatley, Oxford

Overview

Many teachers have expressed concern that middle-grade students are struggling with the problem solving and modelling aspects of the new specifications. This half-day course has been devised to attempt to meet these needs.

Aims

  • To consider approaches to teaching that will support the mathematical understanding of average A level students.
  • To consider strategies for 'teaching' problem solving to A level students.
  • To identify the key skills needed for students to tackle modelling questions with confidence.

Who will benefit from attending?

All teachers of A level mathematics who are concerned about the progress of middle-attaining students.

Content

We will look at three strategies - one long-term, one medium-term and one short-term - which could assist these students in progressing towards their predicted A level grades. There is no magic bullet, but we believe these ideas could form the basis of a departmental strategy for addressing the issue.

Other Information

The course starts at 2.00pm, but lunch will be available from 1.30pm.
