Supporting Students with Higher Level Problem Solving - STEP

A one day course focusing on the development of a problem-solving mindset and stategies for preparing students for STEP examinations

Course Leader, Luciano Rila, works in the Department of Mathematics at UCL and is an Area Coordinator for the Advanced Maths Support Programme. He has been running STEP courses for a number of years and also offers preparation for the Oxford MAT.


  • To establish the progression from A level mathematics to STEP
  • To identify techniques and strategies needed for success in STEP examinations
  • To provide teachers with a road map to STEP support

Who will benefit from attending?

Suitable for teachers of A level Mathematics and Further Maths who wish to support their students with the STEP examinations.



Topics will include

  • exloring the difference between A level Maths/Further Maths and STEP
  • necessary (but not sufficient) framework for STEP support
  • proofs and curve sketching

Provisional Programme

9:15 - Welcome and refreshments

9:30 - Session 1: Introduction to A level verses STEP (the aim of this session is to present an introduction to STEP papers and establish the progression from A level to STEP 3, highlighting the differences between A level and STEP skills)

11:00 - break

11:15 - Session 2: Curve sketching: (Curve sketching is a common issue with STEP candidates, oftn highlighted in the examiner's report. This session aims to cover the techniques neede in the STEP papers. There will be time for teachers to attempt past paper questions.

12:45 - lunch (provided)

13:30 - session 3: Proofs and lessions from the examiner's report (examiner's reports are invaluable documents that shed light on the common weaknesses of STEP candidates. They should therefore inform the support we offer. The session addresses strategic skills that are often neglected in STEP preparation but that can make or break a candidate. We will focus on questions on proof to investigate the issue.

15:30 - Session 4: Supporting your students with STEP preparation (The closing session is a roadmap to resources and suggestions on how to support your students in their preraration for the STEP papers.
