An Introduction to STEP Mathematics



A one-day course focusing on the development of a problem-solving mindset and strategies for preparing students for STEP examinations.


  • To establish the progression from A-level to STEP mathematics
  • To identify techniques and strategies needed for success in STEP examinations
  • To provide teachers with a roadmap to STEP support


Topics will include exploring the difference between A-level Maths/Further Maths and STEP, necessary (but not sufficient) framework for STEP support, proofs and curve sketching

09:30-10:00: Registration and refreshments
10:00-11:00: Session 1 – Introduction and A-level vs. STEP
The aim of this session is to present an introduction to the STEP papers and establish the progression from A-level to STEP 3, highlighting the differences between A-level and STEP skills.
11:00-11:15: Break
11:15-12:45: Session 2 – Curve Sketching
Curve sketching is a common issue with STEP candidates, often highlighted in the examiner’s report. This session aims to cover the techniques needed in the STEP papers. There will be time for teachers to attempt some past paper questions.
12:45-13:30: Lunch
13:30-15:15: Session 3 – Proofs and lessons from the Examiners’ report
Examiners’ reports are invaluable documents that shed light on the common weaknesses of STEP candidates. They should therefore inform the support we offer. This session addresses strategic skills that are often neglected in STEP preparation but that can make or break a candidate. We will focus on questions on proof to investigate the issue.
15:15-15:30: Break
15:30-16:00: Session 4 – Supporting your students with STEP preparation
The closing session is a roadmap to resources and suggestions on how to support your students in their preparation for the STEP papers

Other Information

Course Leader : Luciano Rila works in the Department of Mathematics at UCL and is an Area Coordinator for the Advanced Maths Support Programme. He has been running STEP courses for a number of years and also offers preparation for the Oxford MAT


This course is provided free of charge to teachers in state-funded schools.
