West Midlands Teacher Network
Raising Confidence at GCSE
The West Midlands Mathematics Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers to meet, collaborate and to share best practice. We usually meet termly and the programme is mainly speaker-led training events. We try to provide meetings that look at pertinent issues that have an impact on the West Midlands area.
With the new GCSE in its third year, a skill that many students find difficult is the ability to reason mathemtically. One of the many challenges for teachers is to help them to develop their ability to follow a line of enquiry, conjecture relationships and generalisations, and develop an argument, justiciation or proof using mathematical language in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum.
A new suite of courses aimed at Raising Confidence with Reasoning, Problem Solving and Higher Level Mathematics, which provides strategies and resources to use in the classroom with secondary students is available to all teachers. More information can be found at Raising Confidence courses.
In this meeting we would like to invite all teachers who teach mathematics at KS4 level (or below) to a "taster" of these Raising Confidence CPD days presented by Jan Parry.
Jan Parry both designed some the content of the Raising Confidence courses and delivers them all over the country. She has taught mathematics for thirty years, worked as Secondary Mathematics Consultant with Leicestershire LA before becoming an Independent Mathematics Consultant.
The meeting starts at 4.30pm with light refreshments available from 4pm.
