Year 12 Higher Level Problem Solving Conference and CPD for teachers.

Keele

Overview

A one day conference for year 12 maths students & their teachers to introduce and develop Higher Level Problem Solving Skills.

Students will think about the information that they see in a mathematical situation, the skills that could be required for that situation, to decide what skills will be required to solve certain problems.

The Professional Development for teachers will help teachers to effectively prepare their students for the problem solving requirements of their final examination and provide them with a plan for developing their most able students, enabling them to consider universities that require admissions tests.

Aims

  • To provide students with an opportunity to begin to increase their depth of mathematical understanding and so gain confidence in attempting more challenging questions and problems.
  • To allow students to discuss and try out problem solving strategies, to think about different ways of looking at example problems and how to approach writing solutions.
  • To provide teachers with information about the problem solving requirements of university admissions tests.
  • To provide teachers with information about sources of problems that can be used to develop problem solving skills.

Who will benefit from attending?

Any Year 12 A level Maths or Further Maths student who has an interest in developing their Higher Level Problem solving skills, and enjoys working on and solving problems.

Teachers of A-level Maths and/or Further Maths who wish to help to improve the Problem Solving Skills of their students and will benefit by learning about the problem solving requirements of university admissions tests and the support that is available for students preparing for these.

Content

The content of the day has to be finalised, but will consist of different workshops, which introduce students to different types of problems.

Teachers will join their students for some of the workshops as well as attending a session that provides information about university admissions tests and where support for these can be found.
