Year 10 Maths Enrichment
QMUL, Mile End Campus
This event, with a majority of female speakers, would be an ideal opportunity to promote mathematics to your Year 10 girls in particular but all genders are equally welcome to attend.
Who will benefit from attending?
This event is aimed at year 10, GCSE grades 6/7 aspiring students.
Maths Options Post 16 – James Morris (AMSP)
This talk will look at the maths options available to students beyond GCSE including the utility of maths to support other subjects and career choices. Examples of the maths covered in Core Maths, A Level Maths and Further Maths will be included.
Maths in Higher Education – Stef Hurrell (QMUL)
This talk will consider the reasons students may want to study maths at university and some of the different areas of maths they may study.
The Domino Computer – Zoe Griffiths (Think Maths)
Modern computers use only two digits in a binary number system. In this workshop, students will build a basic computer out of only dominoes! This session will give students a chance to think about how to build logic circuits, and learn how computers function on a basic level.
Paper Cups – The Operational Research SocietyHow many identical paper cups can your group make in 2 minutes following our instructions? How many can you make when you’re in charge of the process? Analyse whether you improved the process or not using maths, statistics and operational research (OR) and learn about some real life processes that were improved by OR. Which group will create the most paper cups?
How Safe is Your Data – Cath Moore (AMSP)
This session will look at the maths involved in encrypting data, from early encryption methods to the latest developments. Teachers will be given access to a presentation they can use in school with their classes as a follow up should they wish to.
Tour of the QMUL Campus
The day will also include a tour of the QMUL campus by current student ambassadors. To get the most out of this session students should think in advance of questions they would like to ask the ambassadors.
Priority will be given to schools who did not attend the AMSP enrichment at QMUL in December and to state funded schools.
To request places please contact James Morris ([email protected]).
