Edgbarrow School Teacher Network

Mathematical Writing

Overview

Edgbarrow Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers of Mathematics in the Crowthorne, Bracknell and Wokingham area of Berkshire to meet, collaborate and to share best practice. We meet termly and the programme is planned by teacher request and will include informal sessions and training events.

Content

Writing a structured chain of reasoning is a crucial skill for which many students find challenging. This is especially true in the new A level courses.

In this network meeting we will explore puzzles based on language and logic that can be used to help students understand how to construct a sequential argument. In particular, we will discuss the notation that students may find helpful when presenting their answers. As a bonus, we might discover why some kangaroos look ridiculous, whether I have met a mermaid and if I can write good poetry?
