West Midlands Teacher Network

Preparing to teach Statistics at A level

Overview

The West Midlands Mathematics Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers to meet, collaborate and to share best practice. We usually meet termly and the programme is mainly speaker-led training events. We try to provide meetings that look at pertinent issues that have an impact on the West Midlands area.

Content

This Network Meeting, lead by Paul Chillingworth, will suggest ways to prepare students for the statistics section of  A Level Mathematics.  We will look at the changes in approach to teaching concepts with the introduction of the large dataset and the use of the enhanced scientifcic calculator. We consider how these changes are reflected in the questions set by awarding bodies.

Paul is a member of the AMSP Central Team where he is responsible for organizing online tuition for students studying Further Mathematics A Level.  He also leads the Teaching Statistics Course and delivers other PD such as the use of technology.  Prior to working for the AMSP and the FMSP, Paul taught mathematics for 26 years in both the UK and overseas.

Materials and Equipment

Please bring the calculator that you currently use with students at A level. It would be useful to have a laptop with a copy of your awarding body large dataset on it, so that you can refer to this.
