Year 12 course for students preparing for MAT, TMUA and STEP
University admissions tests such as MAT, TMUA and STEP present a considerable challenge to even the ablest A-level maths students. Many students struggle with the increase in intensity and depth of knowledge required to tackle these tests. Although there is a limited amount of help vailable online, many students find it tough to prepare alone. They can also find it difficult to gauge how well they measure up compared to others taking the exams.
Last year, the AMSP worked with a small number of Year 12s from Brooke Weston Academy to prepare them for MAT and STEP. All three of the student who regularly attended the course applied to Cambridge and Oxford, and two of them were successful in getting interviewed. One of the three has an offer from Cambridge to read Maths. We see great potential in extending this opportunity for students from other schools in the area.
Even students who do not wish to take university admissions tests will enjoy the course if they enjoy tackling challenging maths questions. It will give them an oportunity to extend themselves mathematically and to meet like-minded students from other local schools.
- To increase depth of knowledge in maths
- To tackle some difficult maths problems
- To see what is required to successfully negotiate university maths admission tests
