Year 12/13 Problem Solving Course - Preparing for STEP



A series of maths problem-solving sessions designed to give students the confidence to apply for university courses that require or take into consideration achievement in an admissions test.

These regular classes offer students the opportunity to develop mathematical problem-solving skills through discussion and collaboration. They are designed to help students to develop strategies and confidence when tackling unfamiliar problems in maths and will help with preparations for taking advanced papers such as the MAT, TMUA and STEP examinations.

The course will look at past exam materials from STEP 1 papers and will identify ways to tackle in-dpeth maths problems. It will also help students develop there own problem solving skills in mathematics to gain confidence with such questions.

The course will occur on five seperate 3-hour blocks, timetabled for Wednesday afternoons 3 - 6pm. The course dates are as follows:

  • 3rd April
  • 17th April
  • 1st May
  • 15th May
  • 29th May


  • To develop initial strategies when dealing with maths problems
  • To develop confidence when dealing with maths problems
  • To develop resilience when dealing with maths problems
  • To familiarise yourself with STEP 1 style questions

Who will benefit from attending?

  • This course is suitable for any Year 12 students who are thinking of applying for University courses who will require the STEP admissions test for entry (for example Cambridge, Warwick, Bath)
  • OR it will be particularly useful for Year 13 students who have been asked for a grade in STEP 1 (but not STEP 2 or 3).


There may be funding to cover the cost of the event fee if you are deemed as being from a school or college from an "opportunity area". Please enquire as to whether you are eligible for this using the contact info below.
