STEP Preparation Course at Newcastle University
A weekly series of sessions focussed on prepartion for the STEP paper or gaining experience of the challenge of STEP questions.
- Get experience and advice on tackling STEP questions and papers.
- Develop mathematical and problem solving skills.
- Work alongside other students and gain experience of presenting solutions and mathematical arguments.
Who will benefit from attending?
This course is aimed primarily at Year 13 students who have been given a university offer that includes STEP. It would also be suitable for able Year 12 students who anticipate sitting either STEP or similar papers such as MAT/AEA/TMUA next year or who simply relish a serious mathematical challenge! We use different questions on alternate years and use lots of questions that do not require Year 13 content so there is no reason why Year 12 students should not attend, so long as they can cope with the difficulty of the questions. In very exceptional circumstances, we might accept students from lower year groups but you must contact us in advance about this.
We also welcome attendance by school teachers or those currently in teacher education. Please contact us by email if you are a teacher or trainee wishing to attend.
In these sessions you will get to work on STEP questions alongside students with similar aspirations and be given support and advice regarding all matters related to STEP and similar papers.
We will use the “Road Map” format of question with a carefully broken down set of hints and solutions to allow you as much or as little help as you need as you progress.
Later in the course you will get to present your solutions to other students and attempt questions in a “Mock Exam” format.
Materials and Equipment
Students are expected to bring paper and writing equipment. Other equipment such as calculators may be brought as well but this is not required.
We advise students to bring their own pens, pencils, paper and other equipment. If they wish, they may also bring calculators or other technological devices.
We aim to start at 4:00 pm (although we understand that not all students will be able to arrive by this time so there is no problem arriving later) and finish at 5:30 pm.
Every Thursday from 24th Jan to 23rd May 2019 (excluding 21st Feb, 11th Apr, 18th Apr), 4:00pm to 5:30pm, Herschel Building, Newcastle University.
