Little Heath Teacher Network

A level SOW - a textbook light version


The Little Heath Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers of Maths in the Reading and West Berkshire areas to meet, collaborate and share best practice. We meet termly and the programme is planned by teacher request and will involve a mixture of informal sessions and training events


We will be examining the A level BOM ( Berks/Oxford/Milton Keynes Teachers of Maths) SOW with Alexandra Hewitt.

The SOW is textbook light ie it does not rely on any textbook and is based firmly in the understanding that content should be taught through problem solving activities. Whilst fluency is essential, it should not be at the expense of developing understanding and problem solving skills. The teachers who wrote this firmly believe that fluency can be achieved through rich activities as well as routine exercises: there is a place for both.

Alexandra will discuss the principles behind the SOW and how it developed through working on one unit in the SOW. Teachers should then be able to work from the SOW as is, or develop their own resources through using these principles
