Maths and Beyond 2019
Maths and Beyond is a fun, interactive, maths enrichment event for students in years 10 and 11 to inspire them and encourage them to consider taking their study of maths to A level and beyond! The day is comprised of classroom-sized workshops, finishing with a plenary session from our inspirational keynote speaker, Dr. Emily Grossman.
3 active workshops, including:
- Japanese Grid Puzzles — Can you Solve it?
- Google and Gaming
- Magical Maths
- What is SynBio?
- Strategy Games: an introduction to game theory
Please note that due to room capacity, sessions will be chosen for you on your behalf.
Additionally, Dr. Emily Grossman will deliver a plenary:
- Lies, Damned Lies and Newspapers
- Can we believe everything we read in the papers? Sometimes mis-takes arise in the media because of genuine errors. Sometimes data from scientists is misinterpreted or misunderstood. And sometimes the media knowingly spin or distort statistics to tell a good story. Who knew?! In this interactive and amusing talk, Dr. Emily Grossman takes a light-hearted look at these issues – illustrated with examples of “embarrassing moments” where she’s been caught out in her own career as a TV science broadcaster.
