Plymouth Teacher Network

Proof; how we can support the teaching and learning of the proofs required for AS and A Level Maths and Further Maths

Plymouth Teacher Network is an AMSP-funded project, allowing teachers of maths to meet, collaborate and to share best practice. We meet termly and the programme is mainly speaker-led training events and informal sessions.

  • Proof: requirements and examples
  • Developing student skills; discussion
  • Resources and ideas

During the session we will look at some examples of proof and consider ways in which to develop student skills in reasoning and proof.

What does proof look like for our post-16 mathematicians, how does it compare between GCSE and A Level Mathematics, what proofs are expected and how might this impact on our teaching?

Ahead of the meeting it would be useful if you could consider what has worked well this year and if you know of any good proof tasks or questions (including exam questions) please bring them along to share.

This session is free thanks to funding from the AMSP. Light refreshments will be provided.

Materials and Equipment

Please bring along examples of proofs you have used with your classes or questions that you have found in L3 maths assessments (recent or old).
