CSI Differential Equations



A study afternoon for Y13 Further Mathematicians

Using Differential Equations to solve crimes.

Can you determine the time of death?

Was the drink poisoned?

Students will model realistic situations and discover situations where they will need to develop new techniques for solving differential equations.


  • To understand the need for new analytical methods for solving Differential Equations
  • To practise modelling situations mathematically

Who will benefit from attending?

All students of A level Further Mathematics


This day is intended to introduce and motivate the work on Differential Equations in the Compulsory Pure Content for all Further Mathematics specifications.

It is essential that students have covered the work on Differential Equations in ordinary A level Mathematics (ie setting up equations and solving by separating the variables) but have NOT begun the Further Mathematics content. We have chosen a date so that this should work for you!

Preliminary deadline for applications: Friday 21st December

The event will not run if we do not have sufficient schools applying by this date. Payment is online by card, and details of how to pay will be sent out in January, once we know the event is running.


Please note that this event is targeted at schools with smaller cohorts and there is therefore a maximum of 15 students per school.


There will be a cost of £5 per student, provided that your school/college is registered with the FMSP, otherwise the cost will be £10 per student. Light refreshments will be provided.

Accompanying staff attend free of charge. This is an excellent opportunity for teachers to develop their own knowledge.
