Year 12 and 13 Problem Solving
Newcastle upon Tyne
In these sessions, you will explore problem solving through a variety of activities including mini competitions, collaborative challenges and sets of interesting questions. You will develop general mathematical problem-solving skills, as well as skills in estimation, graph sketching, and use of technology in solving problems. It is also an opportunity to meet other aspiring young mathematicians and share experiences of learning and doing mathematics.
Each session is essentially stand-alone so there is no requirement necessarily to attend all five sessions, although we would encourage students to attend as many sessions as they can. Students who have attended similar sessions in previous years can expect to meet plenty of new materials this year.
Sessions will take place on:
- 10 November 2018
- 2 February 2019
- 16 March 2019
- 4 May 2019
- 13 July 2019
Who will benefit from attending?
This course is aimed primarily at Year 12s and Year 13s intending to study mathematical subjects at university and would be particularly beneficial to those expecting to sit entrance exams such as MAT/STEP/TMUA or be invited to a mathematical degree admissions interview. It would also suit students preparing for recreational challenges such as those provided by the UKMT, or any student who just enjoys doing maths!
Able students from lower year groups (e.g. Year 10 or 11) may attend too on the understanding that they will be working alongside 6th formers and engaging in material at a level comparable to, say, the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. Please contact us by email if you wish to send such a student.
We also welcome attendance by school teachers or those currently in teacher education. Please contact us by email if you are a teacher or trainee wishing to attend.
Materials and Equipment
We advise students to bring their own pens, pencils, paper and other equipment. If they wish, they may also bring calculators or other technological devices.
We aim to start by around 9:15 am and finish by 1:15 pm, with some short breaks in between. Unfortunately we cannot provide refreshments so we would strongly encourage students to bring food and drinks along with them. There is also a cafeteria on site should anyone wish to purchase refreshments.
