Problem Solving Approaches for GCSE

Overview

The NW Online PD Pick 'n' Mix Network is a series of themed sessions to support Maths Teachers. It will be ideal for any teachers including those who have recently started teaching, or just someone who wants some new teaching ideas. 

  • the Pick 'n' Mix design allows teachers to dip into as many or as few sessions as they like
  • there will be a strong emphasis throughout the sessions on pedagogy, problem-solving and technology

Content

This session will explore how teachers can use different strategies to support KS3 & GCSE students to confidently tackle unfamiliar mathematical problems.

We will look at task design and resources, as well as teachers’ use of heuristics, modelling and worked examples - all with the aim of improving pupils’ metacognitive skills and resilience in answering problem-solving questions.

By the end of the session, you should be able to take awat a number of strategies in how to model and support students' problem solving skills in your classroom.
