Dynamic visualisation of data
MaidenheadOverview
This is a one day professional development course investigating how data can be visualised using technology.
By using technology we will consider how changes to the data affect these visualisations and how, through these changes, we can help to develop students' understanding and appreciation of summary statistics, their ability to make comparisons between different data sets and their ability to efficiently analyse data.
We will be using spreadsheets and the Desmos graphing calculator throughout this course and it will be essential to have access to a laptop.
Over the course of the day we will develop these ideas to show how random samples can be generated and visualised along with developing these concepts to perform hypothesis tests.
Aims
- Introduce dynamic visualisations of data by using the Desmos graphing calculator
- Use the Desmos graphing calculator and spreadsheets to support students understanding and learning of statistics
- Use of Desmos and spreadsheets to take random samples of data sets and produce visualisations from these
Who will benefit from attending?
This course will be suitable for all teachers of Mathematics who wish to develop their students' understanding and ability to analyse and interpret data from KS3 to KS5.
Content
During this course we will be using real data, spreadsheets and the Desmos graphing calculator to visualise and analyse this data. Over the three session during the day we will focus on
- Generating summary statistics, changing elements of the data and seeing the effect, analysing single and bivariate data sets.
- Using the Desmos graphing calculator to effectively generate multiple random samples and how the sample and sample size can effect the summary statistics obtained.
- Developing how the random sample obtained impacts the outcome of a hypothesis test
Along with suggesting ideas that may be useful for all Key Stages
Materials and Equipment
To get the most from this course you will need to use a laptop with spreadsheet facilities as we will be manipulating and using spreadsheets.
Guest access to WiFi will be provided.
Other Information
Refreshments and lunch will be provided throughout the day, please put any dietary requirements on your application.
Eligibility
Any teacher working in a school or college in the UK can apply for this course. However, due to the way we are funded, priority will be given to teachers in state-funded schools and colleges in England.
Applications from those teaching GCSE or A level Mathematics in other institutions will be confirmed if there is capacity.
