Keele Teacher Network
Extending Able A Level Maths StudentsOverview
Problem solving is one of the overarching themes of the A level specifications. Students need to be able to analyse a problem, break it down into its constituent parts and select the appropriate mathematics to solve it. This network meeting will introduce teachers to strategies that develop key problem-solving skills in all of their students and will show how the embedding of problem-solving materials contributes towards the ambition and intent of the department's A level curriculum.
The meeting will start with ideas for developing general mathematical problem-solving skills. It will also consider how including carefully selected MAT and TMUA questions in your lessons will push all of your students to refine their problem solving skills and allow them to attain more highly in their A level examinations. Higher attainment will provide the opportunity for students to apply for universities where an admission test is required or to a university where a good score in an admissions test can lead to a lower offer.
This meeting is suitable for any A level maths teacher who wishes to integrate problem solving into their AS/A level teaching.
As this will be an interactive session we recommend that to get the most from the discussion you will need a microphone available and a webcam would enable better communication.
The meeting will give the opportunity for people to share experiences, ideas and successes, and to seek advice from colleagues.
