Overview
Level 3 Core Maths is all about contextualised problem solving; finding out you will be teaching it for the first time can feel overwhelming. You may be thinking, where can I find resources? How do I choose activities which will motivate my students? How do I prepare them for assessment?
‘Preparing to Teach Core Maths’ is a four week live online professional development course which will provide you with all the support and information you will need to starting teaching the course with confidence.

On completion of the course, you should feel confident with the:
- Selection and delivery of engaging activities
- Multiple approaches to inspire students to want to take Core Maths
- Structure of assessment and ways of preparing your students for it
- Consideration of how the different versions of Core Maths support other L3 courses

This course is aimed at those who will be teaching Level 3 Core Maths for the first time in September 2026.

Due to popular demand, this course will run twice this year, giving you the flexibility to choose the option that best suits you: Tuesdays starting on the 28th April or Mondays starting on the 8th June.
Content
In each of the sessions we will model and reflect on tried and tested activities that are ideal to use with students at the start of the course.

- Structure of assessment and ways of preparing your students for it
- Consideration of how the different versions of Core Maths support other L3 courses
Materials and equipment
During online sessions, we give delegates opportunities to discuss ideas with each other in breakout rooms. Participants should expect to be proactive in communicating during sessions, so we strongly encourage the use of microphones and webcams.
We recommend that you register and have access to the Core Maths Platform before you begin the course. Once you have registered, you will receive further information on managing accounts and setting up student groups.
Eligibility
All teachers are eligible to apply for this course. Teachers in state-funded schools, colleges and academies in England are eligible for a free place on this course, funded by the AMSP.
Applications for free places will be checked to verify eligibility. Free places are offered on a first come, first served basis.
MEI is able to offer a number of fee-paying places on this course for those who do not qualify for a free place.
Cost
AMSP-funded places are available free of charge to teachers working in state-funded schools, colleges and academies in England, these will be allocated to qualifying teachers on a first come, first served basis.
For applicants who are not eligible for a free place, the fee is £135.
Study schedule
Each weekly session runs from 4-5:30pm with a further 30 minutes to allow for questions and bespoke support.
