Overview

This 9-week live online course introduces students to the maths and statistics behind machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Through hands-on coding tasks in Python and real-world datasets, students will develop practical skills in data analysis, modelling, and ethical AI.

Aims

  • To develop students' knowledge of how maths and statistics underpin machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI)
  • To support students' future study/careers by developing practical skills in modelling with real data

Who will benefit from attending?

Students in Years 12–13 who are interested in data science or how maths is used in machine learning and AI but are not studying A level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. This course is particularly appropriate for students who are studying Core Maths or A level Computer Science.

Content

  • Data analysis: preparing data, exploratory data analysis and visualisations
  • Machine learning: building models from data
  • Artificial intelligence: how AI works, bias and ethics of AI

Each lesson will focus on a particular aspect of data science/AI and include opportunities for students to explore some coding tasks using the Python programming language. Students will work on real data taken from different contexts, including topics such as the environment, sport, commerce, and demographics

Assessment:

The course is assessed through a 1-hour written exam and practical task of using a Python notebook to build models from data.

Materials and equipment

The live online lessons will take place in Zoom webinars. The coding tasks will use the Kaggle online platform.

Eligibility

This course is only open to students from state-funded schools, colleges and academies in England who are not studying A level Mathematics or Further Mathematics.

Teachers register their students for this course via the 'Apply' button. We cannot accept applications directly from students.

Please note that places are strictly limited to a maximum of 15 students from a school/college.

Applications will close by Friday 5th December at the latest. We expect this course to fill before this date and will close applications early if we reach capacity.

We are also running a version of this course for students studying A level Mathematics.

Cost

This course is free to attend.

Study schedule

This course will be held over 9 weekly online lessons on Mondays (17:00-18:00). The first lesson will take place on Monday 12th January 2026.

Can students apply directly for this course?

No. All applications must be made through a teacher.

What should I do if there are more than 15 students at the school/college who are interested in enrolling?

Unfortunately we can only accept a maximum of 15 students from a school/college.

Can year 10 or 11 students apply for the course?

No. This course is only for students in years 12 or 13 who are not taking A level Mathematics or A level Further Mathematics.

Participant feedback

This was a course I really enjoyed. I was able to develop my analysis skills overall and I can now analyse data professionally. This also aided my learning of statistics in maths A-level. Thank you so much for the opportunity!
The feedback from our students was very positive. All said they would recommend it to next year's cohort and felt it met the objectives. They are grateful for the opportunity.
