An end-of-year message from Will Warne, our Level 3 Programmes Director
“This year has been a rewarding one for the AMSP.
We delivered the new Higher Level Maths Achievement programme for the first time, in partnership with the NCETM and Maths Hubs. This programme was developed following data from the Maths pipeline report, which shows that fewer than 52% of students in the highest quintile of disadvantage who excel at Key Stage 2 go on to achieve top grades (7-9) at GCSE maths, compared to nearly 74% of their more affluent peers. Through our work, we aim to address this inequity and support more young people to fulfil their mathematical potential. The video linked here highlights one of the schools involved in the programme.
We are continuing to tackle the gender gap in participation in both A level Mathematics and A level Further Mathematics with our Girls Progression Programme. We have launched a new programme helping students and teachers understand the Maths behind AI – mathematics is essential for the innovation and development of AI.
Whilst all this change has taken place, we have continued to run our professional development, providing support for teachers at Higher GCSE, A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics and University Admissions Tests/Higher Level Problem Solving. We have also continued our A level Further Mathematics student tuition for schools that require it. Next year, our student support for University Admissions Tests will be part of the AMSP offer.
The new features in the programme are designed to ensure opportunities for all students to study maths post-16, regardless of their location, gender, ethnicity, or background. It is something we feel very strongly about.”
